Does anyone know what the DM traffic looks like on twitter? Maybe there are all sorts of short convos teeming underneath it all. Maybe people are interacting in standard ways and we just can't see it? What are the odds of that, eh?

Maybe that last point is the point. Maybe we're not supposed to remember anything that happened, say, two screens ago. Sure, we remember that people post, but what they say is somehow irrelevant. Style wins over substance again.
(Obviously, it's going to be one hell of a weekend....)

I like the popup confirmation idea. The default shoud be "no, it's not spam" - that way the result of an "automatic" response isn't so dire.

There's a nice group of threaded conversations on Jaiku that are talking about just this thing: one's at http://ericrice.jaiku.com/presence/14322053#c-396946.
Oddest thing about this is that unless you've tried Jaiku, you don't know what you're missing. And although I'm in both places, I really enjoy the personalities over here. And the channels. And the general watchfulness of the "Thugs in Charge" (who I'm hoping against hope will remain at least a little bit in charge of that vibe for a while).

I think of this as "lateral blogging," ninety degrees from the "vertical" semi-conversations that happen on a conventional blog.
Of course, that's just another way to compare the exclamatory and the conversational. Guess it all depends on how much control you want or need (over your own site, or with the commentators here). Personally, I like the working without the net [with all due respect to eric> heh].

The only problem I seem to have with the IM notification is that I sometimes find myself getting my active IM windows screwed up. Apologies for past and future non sequitur postings (that I try to trash as quickly as possible).

I've been here since March, and it's only been since the "big news" on Tuesday that I've noticed the feeds going missing, so I'm hoping that when things calm down a bit, they'll be running normally again.
Search around for the discussions about feed-feeding; a lot has to do with how frequently the various places allow Jaiku to look for them. Or just ask for Malach to answer this, and he may just mysteriously appear....
Of course, when the feeds DO start showing up, be prepared to look for the 'unsubscribe' option in each contact's feed lists. That will just stop the selected feed, not anything else from that contact. Unless, of couse, you want to see every last song that everyone's listening to on last.fm.
